What to Wear for your headshots:

You’ve finally decided to book a professional headshot session to look your best and promote yourself! Yippeee!! Now let’s tackle that tough question of WHAT TO WEAR?

What you choose to wear in your headshots will help establish your professional identity within your network and will most likely be used in various scenarios in your career. It is important to choose an outfit that you feel confident in and also reflects your industry. When in doubt, look at what a leader you respect wears in their headshot or on a daily basis.

Below are some simple tips when it comes to picking out the perfect outfit for your professional headshot:

Color choice

Pick a color you know you look good in! Neutral tones tend to be best for any industry. If you are in the creative industry don’t be afraid to wear a bold color that will capture people’s attention. Avoid patterns as they can often be distracting. Also consider your background (a dark gray) and make sure you don’t choose a color where you will blend in too much with the background.

Formal is Better

The way you feel behind the camera will impact how you appear in your photos, so consider formal clothing that makes you feel good about yourself. Keep in mind that fitted clothing tends to look cleaner and less distracting than loose or baggy clothing.

It’s important to keep your profession in mind when choosing an outfit, but even if you work in an industry where casual dress is standard it is best to wear clothes that are slightly nicer than your everyday attire. A suit jacket or blazer is a great way to stay formal and we can take a few photos without the jacket/blazer to provide a more casual look too.

Keep it Simple

Women, simple jewelry is a better choice as you don’t want anything to distract from your face. Avoid shirts with ruffles, tons of layers or fancy collars.

Men avoid wearing a white undershirt in your headshot. Also when wearing a button up shirt, make sure your collar is stiff and not floppy.

Clean + Ironed

I feel like this goes without saying, but make sure your clothes are clean without any stains. Also make sure they are not wrinkled. Look like you put some thought into your outfit and did not just roll out of bed and throw something on.

When it comes down to it, there is no “correct” answer on what you have to wear to your professional headshot, but I hope these tips help. Most importantly, wear an outfit that you feel confident will showcase who you are and the person you represent in your industry or want to represent in your future career!
